Easy Romanian Crusty Bread

Growing up in the Romania, both of my grandmothers used to make fresh homemade bread and it was delicious. Sometimes there was even leftover dough, and they would that to make langos (Hungarian fried dough). Making bread back then was not easy; I remember grandma waking up at 3:00AM to start the dough. This process started in the middle of the night and continued until 10:00AM. It took that long because my grandma would bake for the whole week in one day. This is how she used to save money and continue feeding us something delicious made with lots of love. I remember how great the house would smell when I would return from school and sometimes I would eat one full loaf all by myself with some lard or margarine sprinkled with salt.

Those are some of my favorite memories, and I have recently been finding myself missing good bread. Here in America, I cannot buy a loaf of bread at the grocery store that reminds me of home. I have to make it at home and put time and extra love into like my grandmothers once did. Kitchen appliances have come a long way, and now I can bake it without all the effort my grandmothers used to put in it. I love eating this bread with some butter and salt on top. Or even better, butter & jam with a tall glass of milk. Enjoy!
