Growing up in Romania, I cannot say that I used to eat chicken wings or that my family used to make wings on special occasions. Wings are definitely something that I associate with the United States. Having been in the United States for over 14 years, I can say that I have fallen in love with wings, and I cannot imagine my life without them.
Deep-fried chicken wings have been a staple of American Southern cooking for a long time. In the 1980's, U.S. consumers started enjoying chicken wings since they were an inexpensive byproduct for chicken producers. Around the same time, bars and restaurants realized that they could start selling this inexpensive protein for a low cost and make lots of money by pairing it with a pitcher of beer.
Wings continue to be considered affordable and are such a great food to share with friends and family. My take on these wings is more fusion since it has a mix of different flavors, but nothing overpowers or dominates.
